I was coming home from Shumin's house today when I realised that there was so many cars on the road. I looked at my watch. It read 11.55. Now I was puzzled. Just a week ago, 11.30pm meant that there was no cars on the road. Especially on that stretch of road.
Then it dawned upon me. It is now safe to go out again after dark, because in the minds of the Chinese, the Hungry Ghost month is over.
The change in number of cars and taxis were such that the total vehicles that I have encountered today were much more than those I have seen drive past Shumin's house in an entire month.
Well. That pretty much shows how superstitious we all are isn't it?
